Phase II SBIR Research Project: Additive Friction Stir
October 17, 2011 - Aeroprobe was recently awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) for continuing work on its revolutionary additive friction stir technology. Aeroprobe's unique FrictionCoat method shows high promise for the ONR's ground-breaking Electromagnetic Railgun program.
Under the recently completed Phase I SBIR, Aeroprobe addressed the problem of gouging and galling at extreme projectile velocities, using the additive friction stir to improve the rails' wear characteristics. Under Phase II, we are tasked with further advancing the game-changing railgun by producing larger coated samples and testing them on the railgun test rig at Georgia Tech. Aeroprobe's friction stir team has produced some of our best stirs to date by redesigning our friction stir equipment.
